The Curious Blue Cottage

Hello!

Welcome to The Curious Blue Cottage.

The home of whimsical, weird and wonderful creations handmade by me, Visual Artist Carla Horton.

Maker of short films, props, puppets and sets. I graduated from BCU in 2021 where I studied Film and Animation.

I specialised in stop motion animation and prop making using various materials including 3D printing.

I live in Stourbridge with my husband, 5 children and 2 dogs, we spend a lot of time out walking which is why a lot of my inspiration comes from nature and mythology. I specialise in textiles, including knitingt and crochet and regularly sell my creations as Sausage Cats at markets.

Also an allotment enthusiast and poultry keeper, aka The Horticultural Hortons

See below for examples of previous and current projects.

Thanks for visiting!

Olbas Oil Advert

Working at Yaminations in August 2022.

Items I made including a miniature jumper, knitted with 0.8mm needles and a small hand stitched dinosaur, footstall and lamps.

Final Project

Puppets and sets I designed and made for my final project at university.

Puppets were made from a selection of latex, fabric and polymer clay. Sets were made from expanding foam, foraged natural materials and 3D printed elements.

House set

Built from mdf and coated in a paint/sand mix for the render and das pronto for the brick work. Windows and guttering were 3D printed.

The house has a working chimney so it could also be used in a live action sequence.

Final Project

This set was also made from expanding foam and a mix of found materials. The plants had to light up so used various clear materials to create glowing and fibre optic elements.

Plan B

Machine prop made for a group project.

Made from a selection of  found materials with a working monitor, fluid system and lights.

Public Information Film

A short I made for university, made from whatever was available.

Puppets and costumes were knitted, an illuminated fish tank and hand painted window.
